Doctors and Masters Everywhere, Not a Single Expert
A nephew earns a doctorate in two and a half years with no new finding, because AI did everything. What is left of mastery when the machine does the research?
“Uncle, I am now a Doctor!” my nephew told me, full of pride.
“Congratulations! How long was your research? What was your innovation?”
“Just two and a half years. I finished a year early. No innovation. No new finding.”
“How is that possible?”
“AI did everything.”
I was shocked. When AI prepares the synopsis, literature survey, methodology, data collection, analysis and interpretation, what is left for the research guide? Just to blindly approve and sign.
Universities across the world produce thousands of Masters and Doctorates every year. But how many of them have the true mastery and expertise to benefit humanity?
What Is Knowledge? How Is It Different from Data?
He asked me, “Uncle, is it even possible to produce new findings in university research today?”
“Quality research results in the production of new, advanced, sophisticated knowledge,” I said.
“Then what is knowledge? How is it different from data?”
Data
Building blocks: bits — zeros and ones. Structure: linear, static, limited-dimensional.
Knowledge
Building blocks: concepts. Structure: non-linear, dynamic, multi-dimensional, exponential.
Knowledge is a network of related concepts arranged by mathematical logic and cybernetic principles. Concepts exist at elementary, basic, advanced and sophisticated levels, and they are subject to constant revision and exponential growth.
The Basis of Sophisticated Knowledge
“So what is the basis for producing sophisticated knowledge?”
Sophisticated knowledge consumption is the basis for sophisticated knowledge production.
In consuming knowledge, we pass through five stages — micro, elementary, basic, advanced and sophisticated. True university education and research must help learners attain sophisticated knowledge consumption, and thereby enable them to produce sophisticated knowledge.
“Are you talking about input-output relations?”
“No. Knowledge consumption and production are the result of Natural Intelligence. That is why what is produced is often quite different — even quite opposite — from what is consumed.”
He smiled. “Now you are distinguishing between Artificial Intelligence and Natural Intelligence. AI works on input-output relations.”
I nodded. “I am happy you are seeing the basic bottleneck of AI — in spite of its increasing computing power, supersonic speed, and brute data with statistical probability.”
This fable illustrates the five stages of knowledge consumption and the principle that sophisticated consumption drives sophisticated production — the core of Mathew’s theories.

A certificate, or genuine mastery — which did your education produce?
